چکیده

The social environment can alter mating tactic expression through modulatory effects on the endocrine system. In anuran amphibians (frogs and toads), males often adopt noncalling mating tactics in response to increased chorus density, but the underlying physiological factors mediating this response are poorly understood. Recent models suggest that density-dependent expression of alternative mating tactics in anurans is associated with a cascade of hormonal events: high chorus density is expected to promote an increase in circulating androgen levels that elicits an increase in vocal effort, a reduction in energy reserves, and elevations in circulating corticosterone (CORT) levels that, in turn, suppress vocalization. Here, we show that chorus density was positively correlated with the proportion of males adopting a noncalling ‘‘satellite’’ mating tactic in explosive-breeding Woodhouse’s toad (Bufo woodhousii). We also show that chorus density was positively correlated with circulating CORT levels in calling males, thereby linking density-dependent mating tactic expression to a hormone that has previously been shown to elicit noncalling mating tactics in this species. Chorus density, however, was not correlated with circulating androgen levels, vocal effort, or body condition. Our results suggest that satellite tactic expression may not be readily traceable to energetic constraints associated with calling behavior—a leading prediction of current models.

Elevated corticosterone levels elicit non-calling mating tactics in male toads independently of changes in circulating androgens.

Competition among males for a limited number of females may result in the expression of condition-dependent alternative mating tactics. In such cases, decision rules mediating mating tactic expression are likely to be influenced by a male's external as well as internal environment. For example, experimental studies with anuran amphibians (frogs and toads) indicate that changes in the social-aco...

Body size, age, growth and alternative mating tactics in toads: satellite males are smaller but not younger than calling males

Body size–age relationships may have important implications for the evolution and maintenance of alternative mating tactics, but these relationships remain largely unexplored in anuran amphibians (frogs and toads). In a single territorial anuran species, smaller noncalling ‘satellite’ males are younger than calling males. These results have led to the general assumption that such an age differe...

P-198: Utilization of Pichia Pastoris Secretion System for Expression of Equine Follicle Stimulating Hormone

Background: Equine follicle stimulating hormone (eFSH) is a pituitary heterodimeric glycoprotein consists of noncovalently linked of generic alpha subunit and a hormone specific beta subunit. The molecular weights of the subunits are similar and about 16 KD. In general, FSH plays a key role in controlling vertebrate gonadal functions. In female mammals, ovarian maturation and follicular growth ...

Stress hormone is implicated in satellite-caller associations and sexual selection in the Great Plains toad.

The effects of androgens on male-typical traits suggest that variation among males in circulating levels can play a major role in sexual selection. We examined whether variation in vocal attractiveness is attributable to differences in androgen levels among Great Plains toads (Bufo cognatus). We found that noncalling "satellite" males practicing an alternative mating tactic were more likely to ...

Octopamine levels relate to male mating tactic expression in the wolf spider Rabidosa punctulata

In the wolf spider Rabidosa punctulata, upon encountering a female, males use one of two distinct strategies: (1) they court the female in an attempt to elicit a mating, or (2) they engage in a direct-mount tactic that involves extensive grappling with the female until a mating is achieved. The latter tactic appears more sexually aggressive, and both tactics come with the risk of being cannibal...
